Box 1, Folder 1, Item 28- Letter to Members of the Christian Church from Dick T. Morgan, N.
Davenport, A. W. Tucker (1887 December 21)
[[Preprinted]]
PERRY, OKLA., Dec. 21, 1897.

To Members of the Christian Church:
There is due Brother Hilton, on salary, about $70. He is just going to house-keeping, and
unless this amount is promptly paid he will be greatly embarrassed. This being the season of
the year, when, by custom, presents are exchanged between friends and relatives, the officers
of the church concluded that, under the circumstances, no present would be so acceptable to
Brother and Sister Hilton as the payment in full of Brother Hilton's salary. By united action, we
believe this can be accomplished, and the following plan has been formulated:
1. Each member of the church (as well as some friends) will be presented with an
envelope and small Christmas card, as here enclosed.
2. Each person is requested to write Brother and Sister Hilton's name in the blank, and
sign his or her name on card. Then place the card in the enclosed envelope and also place
therein as much cash as the person desires to present to Brother and Sister Hilton, with the
understanding that the same will be credited on his salary. The Card, no doubt, will be
preserved by our good minister and wife as a souvenir for many years.
3. Sea the envelope, address it to Brother and Sister Hilton, Ministers Bank, care Santa
Claus, and deliver it to one of the officers, during the week, or take it to the church any time
Friday afternoon or evening, and deliver it to the committee having in charge Christmas tree.
Brother Davenport will prepare a tin box in imitation of a safe or toy bank, in which these will
be securely placed, and during the exercises Christmas eve, the box, with its contents, will be
presented to Brother and Sister Hilton.
4. That the officers may know who amounts are being presented you are requested to
indication the back of the envelope, in figures, the amount presented.

5. The Lord liveth a cheerful giver. To succeed in our undertaking, it is necessary that a
number give us as much as $5.00 apiece; that a larger number give fully half that much, and
that many give at least $1.00 apiece. But what you may give we leave to your prayerful
consideration. If you are unable to give anything; enclose the card to Brother and Sister Hilton,
as an expression of sympathy, good will and Christian fellowship.
6. It is further understood that this is to be a surprise to our minister and his wife, and
therefore secrecy from them is enjoined. This week we expect them to suffer more or less
annoyance for lack of funds, but if all will help as they are able, it will be to them a Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year.
7. Should you for any reason be prevented from delivering your gift at or before the
exercise Christmas Eve, please place it in contribution box, Sunday, Dec. 26, or deliver to
Brother Hilton personally.

Fraternally Yours,
The Official Board Dick T. Morgan, Pres. N. Davenport, Clerk. A. W. Tucker, Treas.
